Selma Selman

Selma Selman (1991) grew up in a Roma family in the village of Ružica near Bihać, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As the first Roma student, she graduated from the Painting Department of the University of Banja Luka in 2014. She received master’s degree in visual and performing arts at Syracuse University in 2018, in New York. Her work is part of numerous international collections and she is the winner of many awards. From 2021 to 2023, she resided in Amsterdam where she was awarded an artist residency at the prestigious Rijksakademie, and, among other things, during the past year her work became part of the 21st Century Collection of the Hamburger Bahnhof, the national gallery in Berlin. Selma Selman is the founder of the “March to School” organization, which aims to empower Roma girls around the world who face social segregation and poverty.

 

She had solo exhibitions at Gropius Bau, Berlin (2023), Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck (2022), MO Museum, Vilnius (2022), Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck (2022), Kasseler Kunstverein Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (2021), National Gallery, Sarajevo (2021), Acb Gallery, Budapest (2021), SU Art Gallery, Syracuse, USA (2018), agnès b. She participated in many collective exhibitions and held performances in galleries and festivals such as: Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Documenta 15, Kassel, Manifesta 14, Pristina, KRASS Kultur Crash Festival, Hamburg, Boulevard Festival, s’Hertogenbosch, Feminist Futures, Dro, EVROVIZION, ifa, Stuttgart, Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennale School of Waters, 58th Venice Biennale, Kunstquartier Bethanien in Berlin, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, New Children Gallery in New Orleans, L’Onde Center for Art in Paris, Queens museum in New York, The Creative Time Summit in Miami, Museum of Contemporary Art in Banja Luka, Villa Romana in Florence, Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, Galerie Boutique in New York and many others.
