What does a story become when it is no longer told through single images, but through rhythm, sequence, and structure?
This intensive three-day workshop focuses on editing as a creative and narrative act. Participants will work with their own ongoing photographic projects or image archives, exploring how meaning shifts through selection, omission, sequencing, and pacing, moving from a loose body of work toward a coherent visual story.
The process begins with editing and reflection, gradually transitioning into publication. Together with award-winning designer duo AA, participants will translate their sequences into a short photo zine, learning how editorial decisions evolve into a physical object. The workshop culminates in a public presentation and pop-up exhibition during the festival.
A key part of the workshop is the collaboration between photographers and designers. Rather than treating design as a final production step, it is approached as an integral part of storytelling. Through close work with AA, participants will explore layout, rhythm, material choices, and visual language as active narrative tools.
Workshop Structure
Day 1 | Editing & Narrative (Simon Chang)
The workshop opens with presentations and group discussions, followed by intensive editing sessions. Participants focus on intention, structure, and narrative clarity, supported by individual feedback and one-to-one mentoring.
Day 2 | From Sequence to Zine (Simon Chang + AA)
The focus shifts from editing to design. Participants begin translating their image sequences into publication form, working closely with AA to explore pacing, layout, and visual structure.
Day 3 | Production & Presentation (Simon Chang + AA)
Final refinements lead to the production of a short photo zine (approx. 12–20 pages, TBC). The workshop concludes with a collective presentation and informal pop-up exhibition, opening dialogue with festival audiences and the wider photographic community.
